Using Include Files To Make Changes To All Your Website Pages Instantly

Subscriber Karen Balacek poses the following question.

“I have a template with my menubar and my banner on all my pages. I change the template and save it as the same template file that I used for creating all my pages. Is there a way I can apply that to all my pages instantly or do I have to make the changes manually for each page?”

The simple answer is to use an Include File. The difficult part may be to understand how to use them. Don’t be intimidated by this however. Using an Include is not really that complex when you understand the basics of how they work and why.

A lot has been written about this subject. Most is rather technical and at best difficult to understand. This article will cover the basics of how an Include File works, in easy to understand language and explain how you can apply this technique saving yourself time and effort as a result.

What is an Include?

If you are familiar with basic html you know that whatever content you put in the html coding will be displayed through an open browser. The content is placed inside html tags on the same page you want to display.

An Include File contains content that is LOCATED SOMEWHERE ELSE instead of right there inside html tags of the page.

The contents of an Include file will also be dispayed through an open browser just as if the content were right there in the html code. That “somewhere else” is usually at a different location somewhere on your server.

Using specific php type language, the html code tells your browser to go to “anotherplace.html”, grab the content and display part or all of it in your browser.

Why Use an Include File?

Why would you want to use an Include File when you can accomplish the same thing in your html coding?

There are a variety of reasons for this, but this one tops my list as the most beneficial.

For the sake of simplicity, lets assume you have a 100 page website and each one of those pages displays the same page header. Lets also assume you just had a beautiful new page header designed and you want it to replace your old one.

If you were use the traditional methods of updating your pages, you would be required to make changes to the html code on 100 pages. That’s a lot of work. Even minor changes to that many pages takes time to accomplish.

By using an Include, you make the changes to the Include File, upload it to your server and it automatically updates those 100 pages for you.

The content inside an Include can be anything you can put on a webpage ie.. text, graphics, audio etc.

The format can be any format you use on your web page, ie.. .txt, .html, .asp, .php etc.

A small piece of php code (NOTE: Replace brackets [ ] with < > below)

[?php include(’http://www.yourwebsite.com/yourpageheader.html’); ?]

replaces the standard code for your page header in your html code.

[img src=”http://yourwebsite.com/yourpageheader.jpg”]

Now when you update your pages you can make changes to ONE file to update hundreds. The beauty of this is there are no limits to the number of Includes you can use on one page.

The Include File originated with the php language, but your pages do NOT need to be in php to use them.

To use an Include File in your html or htm pages you need to add a small .htaccess file to your server. If you do not already have .htaccess file on your server, you can make one in Notepad or any text editor. Starting with a blank page, copy and paste the following code.

#RemoveHandler .html .htm

#AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .htm .html

AddHandler application/x-httpd-php .html .htm

Save the file as .htaccess and upload it to the same folder that contains your index file. If you already have one, update it to include this information.

My Ebook Cover Looks Like It’s Had Too Much To Drink!

We’ve all seen them. Those ugly little covers that look out of wack. What once started out as beautiful ebook cover ends up looking like it had too much to drink. Why? The most common reason is improper use of html code.

The height and width attributes in your html code are used to tell the browser exactly what size the image is and how to display it properly. It works that way with all browsers.

If you’re not familiar with html code, these attributes look like this.

Width=”XXX” Height=”XXX”

(XXX = the actual height and width of your image in pixels - 1 inch = 72 pixels)

Let say for example your images natural attributes are width=”167″ height=”237″.

Natural attributes means it’s the actual size of the image.

By using the images natural attributes in your html code, the image will display correctly and look like the professional cover it started out to be.

You’ll see the smooth clean lines and natural proportions. The cover displays as it was intended to look and does a terrific job of presenting you and your product as the professional you are.

If only life were always that easy. Unfortunately, we have to make adjustments when things don’t fit.

Lets say you look at your webpage you find that your ebook cover is the wrong size to fit in that special place you want to put it. Your first temptation might be to simply alter the attribute numbers to resize the image.

DON’T!

This type of improper sizing using your html code (changing the height and width attributes) to make these type of adjustments only results in distorted images.

Always use the “actual” attributes for your images. Why? Your image is a representation of your product. It’s your online salesman. You wouldn’t let a “human saleman” go out into public and sell your product if he was under the influence of alcohol. You don’t want your “online salesman” to look like it’s had too much to drink either.

So what do you do when you’ve come to this road block?

The ideal solution is to plan ahead and not put yourself into this position. Figure out ahead of time what specific sizes you will need and order those sizes when your images are designed. Be sure and tell your designer what you need. Don’t assume that they will automatically know.

If you find that you need a different size later on, the proper way to resize your image is by using a graphics program or hiring a cover designer to properly resize it for you. The designer may charge you a small fee, but it’s worth it to look like a professional.

If you’re watching your pennies, most any graphics software will do the trick. If you don’t have any software to do this and you don’t want to spend the money to have a designer resize the image for you, search for “Free Graphics Software” on Google and I guarantee you’ll find something suitable at little or no cost.

This is a cost effective way to build a huge list. It is important where you buy your list as you only want to target businesses and potential customers that have a need for your products.

If you have an online store, add a link that offers special deals for customers that agree to opt in tour marketing campaign. Make the offers exclusive so that the customer feels it has been worth their while signing up.

Persuading the Customer to Buy:

The more you personalize your emails the better. You have a much higher chance of people opening your emails if the business name and / or their first name are in the subject heading.

Do not give up after your first mail shot as repetition is key irrespective of how you choose to reach your target market. If you are lucky some people might buy straight away but many people will never give you business until they have received a stream of emails. If you end up getting a response rate of more than one percent you are doing extremely well.

The frequency of emails can also affect your campaign. You do not want to send out too regularly as then you will really annoy the people on your list. On the other hand if you leave it too long between emails then people will lose interest!

You want these keywords to appear as early as possible on your page, but in a grammar friendly format. Listing keywords/phrases randomly on the page is a “No No”. The text content should read well with a good flow. The more keywords you can place in your content, the higher the Keyword Density. Alt Tags and Header Tags increase your Keyword Density.

8. Submit Your Website

Your website needs to be submitted to the major search engines in order for it to be seen in a timely manner. Google, MSN, & Yahoo, along with other major websites, make it available to you to submit your website for review. It is suggested to only submit a few pages a day to a couple of the major search engines. You do not want to perform this daily. Over submitting is a bad thing in the search engine world. Submit our pages a few times a week until you know you have been indexed.

9. Check Your Indexing

Go to the search engine of your choice, type in the keyword/phrase you are interested in, and see if your site has been indexed. You may have to run through a number of pages to find your URL. Once you find your URL, you then know that you have been indexed. You may want to give this a few weeks in order to be indexed.

10. Continue to Refine

Your SEO work is never complete. Getting ranked in the search engines is only the beginning. The on going work required to successfully rank high in the search engines never ends. It’s because of the grueling, never ending, process that most people fail at SEO.
